Understanding the new roles in Primary Care

A resource for HEE North East and North Cumbria developed by the Primary Care Training Hub

Experienced General Practice Nurse

An Experienced General Practice Nurse has advanced skills within primary care, including managing long-term conditions, providing immunisations, wound care, family planning and health screening. They also often act as the first point of contact for patients, sometimes taking on roles traditionally undertaken by GPs, and this builds long-term patient relationships to aim to improve community health. Experienced General Practice Nurses work as part of a multidisciplinary team, making independent decisions as well as working as part of the wider team in general practice.
